Benefits discussed in Ayurveda:

Amalaki is at the very epitome of herbal medicines in Ayurveda. This science describes three energies-the energy of creation(Kapha), sustenance(Pitta) and destruction (Vata) control all mental and physiological activities of our body. Our body is always creating things it needs, using them for our sustenance and clearing them out once the use is done. We are healthy until they work in harmony. If any of these energies increase or decrease and go out of proportion we are afflicted by relevant disease. For example, too much energy of creation causes obesity, too much energy of destruction causes arthritis.

Foods and herbs have ability to support certain energies while countering other energies and this is how diet and herbs are used in Ayurveda to control a disease.

Now, Amalki is special because it is only one of a handful of other herbs (Bibhitaki, Haritaki) that has the ability to dynamically support and counter all three energies. Thus depending on your needs Amalaki is know to automatically support weak energies and counters belligerent ones. Quite literally then, Amalaki is effective against anything. It is not a surprise that almost every ayurvedic herbal protocol will include Amlaki in some form.

It is a common saying in Ayurveda that one who consumes the three berries of Amalaki, Bibhitaki, Haritaki (combines as Visham Triphala) will live to be a youthful, 100 years old!
